Czestochowa City, PolandCzestochowa is one of the most important places of religious worship in the Christian world with traditions of pilgrimage that go back to the 14th century. In recent years-4 - 5 million pilgrims have visited this place annually, including 100 thousand from abroad. Only Lourdes and Fatima host more pilgrims.

The picture was brought to Jasna Gora by Ladislaus, the Duke of the Opole, in 1382, and to house the picture he built a church and Pauline monastery on the top of the lime hill overlooking Czestochowa.
During the Hussite wars in 1430 the monastery was sacked and robbed and the picture profaned. To this day one can see two swords - cuts on the cheek of the Black Madonna.

Częstochowa City, PolandDuring the turbulent times at the beginning of 17th century fortifications were erected to protect the monastery, and a permanent garrison was kept on duty here. In 1655 Jasna Gora successfully withstood a two - month siege by Swedish troops. In 1770 - 1771 the sanctuary was occupied by the Confederates of Bar, who defended themselves here against the Russians. The fortress also held off the Austrians in 1909, but four years later it surrendered to Russian forces. At the time part of the walls were taken down, and the moat was filled up.

The Church of the Assumption and Invention of the Cross was rebuilt after the fire in 1690 into a basilica. The interior of the church is richly decorated with stuccos, frescos and marble in the Baroque style.
